About Open Brain MRI
For an open brain MRI, the space around your head matters as much as the scanner opening. A receiver is positioned around the head to collect the images. Ask the Walters Road team to explain that setup before your appointment if equipment near your face has caused anxiety before. An open scanner does not mean that your head remains outside all equipment.
For details about the examination itself, see our Brain MRI guide. Compare all open MRI examinations at Walters Road.

Head positioning and the receiver
Read the full brain MRI order to scheduling. A pituitary, inner-ear or vascular examination can require a different protocol. If the order includes diffusion tensor imaging, it cannot be performed on the Walters Road open scanner; the team will need to arrange an appropriate high-field location.

Scan Preparation
A doctor’s order is required before your scan. Ask whether your brain study needs contrast and whether earlier brain images should be available for comparison. Discuss equipment near your face before arrival. Follow the team’s instructions for hearing devices and other removable items; implanted devices require screening.
Before you book
- A doctor’s order for the exact examination.
- Read out any pituitary, inner-ear, MRA or DTI wording.
- Explain any difficulty keeping your head steady.
Brain MRI, inner-ear studies and vascular orders
Bring the complete referral rather than requesting a general head scan. If it names the pituitary gland, internal auditory canals or MRA, ask which appointment is needed. Tell scheduling about hearing devices or previous brain surgery so the relevant device records can be reviewed before choosing the open scanner.
MRI safety and your appointment
Open MRI still requires safety screening. Tell the team about implants, metal, possible pregnancy, kidney conditions and previous contrast reactions. Follow the preparation instructions for your appointment.

During your open MRI
The receiver and supports are arranged around your head. Ask the technologist to explain the setup before imaging starts, and agree on how to signal if you need help. Keep your head still during each image set.
Imaging Results & Reports
Your radiologist’s report goes to the ordering clinician, who will explain the findings and next steps. Contact our records team for copies of your images or report.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an open brain MRI include DTI?
The Walters Road open scanner does not perform diffusion tensor imaging. Tell scheduling if DTI appears on your order so the correct scanner and appointment can be arranged.
Will my face be completely clear of equipment?
Do not assume that open MRI means no equipment around the face. A head receiver is still used. Discuss the actual arrangement with Walters Road before booking, especially if this caused difficulty during a previous scan.
Is a doctor’s order required?
Yes. Advantis requires a doctor’s order for every scan, including self-pay appointments. You can request a callback before you have the order; it must be available before the examination.
